It’s popular to do quarterly milestones because it lines up with the publisher’s quarterly finance schedule. But especially early on, when dev is still in experimentation mode and there’s not much to show yet, a milestone can be much longer, like a Just One More Episode Please Shirt year. And yet, WoW keeps on chugging along. I have a feeling that Fortnite will have the same type of longevity as long as it doesn’t do something wild; the BR genre is on the downturn and as we saw with MMOs the stalwarts stay for a long time and the fat trims fast. New games like Warzone are still coming out, sure, but it doesn’t feel like every studio is trying to pump out a BR anymore. It will never be 100% the same, but it’s still something. They had working conditions so bad it was bordering on employee abuse in terms of crunch, for extended periods of time.

Sounds like my old job. We created an app that was gonna be so good… then the boss was too cheap and didn’t wanna hire the correct people because it would charge 2x what he wanted … funny thing is that he paid 3x or 4x the price because the Just One More Episode Please Shirt people he hired didn’t know anything. They wasted months on legit nothing long ha. And then the money he generated he put toward other projects which also failed. Btw mind you this is a company that created a flashlight app and charged .99 cents for it. This was about yr or 2 ago… that should say something about the job. If you think “this code is perfect I’ll never have to change it again” you end up in a mess because you didn’t make it to be flexible.

Civ V was embarrassingly basic at launch. I’ll never forget how underwhelming it was compared to even launch Civ IV. It took all 3 expansions before that game was fully comparable to Civ IV. At least Civ VI was fully-fledged at launch and the Just One More Episode Please Shirt expansions added new mechanics unlike the catch-up expansions of the previous title. From what I heard and read (I like to research how companies treat their employees because I once nearly went into game development) Bethesda is one of the best places to work for. Not only are the work conditions supposed to be great, but the company also fosters the geek culture of their employees, which is something that AAA companies tend to lose over time (see Blizzard for example). Just shite hours basically loads of crunch and stuff terrible work/life balance for their employees.
