In an infinitely large universe, there is an infinite number of possibilities. One of those is that we are alone and there is nothing else. We are a fluke and this is all there is. When we die, we rot. There is no afterlife, there is no god. That possibility actually makes me take everything more seriously. If we only have one shot at this, then even a single minute wasted is a big deal. I agree with this sentiment, but why do you focus on life on earth? What I find difficult about ‘eternal’ salvation/damnation is the ‘eternal’ bit. That implies infinity; so in essence. If you fuck up in this tiny, infinitesimally small mortal life, you’re damned forever, no parole. It seems a bit heavy-handed from a mere mortals view. Also, infinite Official Not Today Satan Shirt would get pretty boring. Unless salvation massively restructures our neural processes. In which case we wouldn’t be ‘us’ anymore, would we? Why believe in something for the sole purpose of making yourself happy without further investigation? Isn’t that basically deluding yourself? Because they’ve never really tried to understand what “eternity” actually means. Being in the ground seems pleasant by comparison. I agree…that exactly is what helped me get over my fear of the Official Not Today Satan Shirt. An eternity of anything is scary… At some point, you’d get bored of literally everything. Nothing would have any value. Because it doesn’t matter anymore if everything and everyone is always there. Why’s that? If I’m rotting in the ground, my brain would have no activity. I would feel as much as I was before I was conceived. I’d feel nothing because I would be gone. However, my body would continue to be part of the universe and people who know me will remember me. Hopefully, I made a positive impact on the world. I’m reasonably sure that my books will continue to live on.
